GST formulas

To add GST: GST = price × rate ÷ 100. Then total = price + GST.

To remove GST: GST = inclusive price × rate ÷ (100 + rate). Then price before GST = inclusive price − GST.

Worked examples

  1. A service costs ₹2,500 before GST at 18%. GST is 2,500 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹450, so you bill ₹2,950. Within the same state that's ₹225 CGST and ₹225 SGST.
  2. A product sells for ₹1,050 including 5% GST. GST is 1,050 × 5 ÷ 105 = ₹50, so the price before GST is ₹1,000.
  3. You quote ₹10,000 plus 18% GST to a client in another state. You charge ₹1,800 IGST, for a total of ₹11,800.

CGST, SGST and IGST

When you sell within your own state, GST is split equally: half is CGST, which goes to the central government, and half is SGST, which goes to the state. Union territories without a legislature use UTGST instead of SGST. When you sell to another state, the whole amount is IGST. The customer pays the same total either way.

Questions

How do I calculate GST on a price?
Multiply the price by the GST rate and divide by 100, then add it on. For ₹1,000 at 18%: 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180 GST, so the total is ₹1,180.
How do I remove GST from a price that already includes it?
Divide the inclusive price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For ₹1,180 including 18% GST: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 before GST, so the GST was ₹180.
Why can't I just subtract 18% from the total?
Because the 18% was charged on the price before GST, not on the total. 18% of ₹1,180 is ₹212.40, and subtracting it leaves ₹967.60, which is wrong. The correct base price is ₹1,000.
Is CGST + SGST more than IGST?
No, the total is the same. Within a state the GST is split in half between the central and state governments (CGST + SGST). Between states it's charged as one IGST amount at the full rate.
What are the GST rates now?
Since the rate changes of September 2025, most goods and services are taxed at 5% or 18%, with 40% for a short list of luxury and sin goods and 3% for gold and silver. Check the rate for your exact HSN or SAC code before you invoice.
Can I use this for VAT or sales tax?
Yes. The maths is the same for any percentage tax. Choose Other and enter your rate, then ignore the CGST and SGST split.
