What a rent receipt for HRA should include

  • Your name, as the tenant.
  • Your landlord's name, and their PAN if rent is over ₹1,00,000 a year.
  • The address of the rented property.
  • The rent amount, in figures and words, and the month it covers.
  • The date and mode of payment.
  • Your landlord's signature, plus a revenue stamp for cash payments over ₹5,000.

How the HRA exemption works

If your salary includes house rent allowance and you choose the old tax regime, part of your HRA can be tax-free. The exempt amount is the lowest of three figures: the HRA you actually receive, a set share of your salary (higher in metro cities), and the rent you pay minus 10% of your salary. Your employer's payroll team applies the exact rules, which is why they ask for rent receipts as proof.

Tips

  • Pay rent by bank transfer or UPI, so every payment has a record.
  • Keep a copy of your rent agreement. Some employers ask for it too.
  • Submit receipts on your employer's schedule, often quarterly or before the year-end deadline.

Questions

Is this rent receipt generator free?
Yes. You can make receipts for up to 24 months at a time, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Do I need my landlord's PAN?
If the rent you pay is more than ₹1,00,000 a year (about ₹8,334 a month), employers usually need your landlord's PAN to allow the HRA exemption. If your landlord doesn't have a PAN, ask your employer what they need instead, usually a signed declaration from the landlord.
When is a revenue stamp needed?
When rent over ₹5,000 is paid in cash, the receipt needs a ₹1 revenue stamp, signed across by the landlord. The generator adds a box for it automatically. Payments by bank transfer, UPI or cheque don't need one.
Can I claim HRA under the new tax regime?
No. The HRA exemption is only available if you choose the old tax regime. Under the new regime, rent receipts won't reduce your tax.
Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?
Generally yes, if they own the home and declare the rent as income in their tax return. Pay by bank transfer or UPI so there's a clear record of each payment.
Does my landlord need to sign every receipt?
Yes. Print the PDF, and ask your landlord to sign each receipt (and the revenue stamp, for cash payments over ₹5,000) before you give them to your employer.
Is my information saved anywhere?
Only in your browser on this device, so it's still there next time. Nothing, including your landlord's PAN, is sent to our servers.
