What a GST tax invoice must include
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists what goes on a tax invoice. The main items are: your name, address and GSTIN; a unique invoice number and date; your client's name, address and GSTIN if registered; HSN or SAC codes and a description for each item; quantity, taxable value and the rate and amount of each tax; the place of supply; whether tax is payable on reverse charge; and your signature or an authorised signatory's. This generator includes all of these. It doesn't handle compensation cess.
CGST + SGST or IGST: a worked example
Say you bill ₹10,000 for a service taxed at 18%. If you and your client's place of supply are both in Maharashtra, you charge CGST at 9% (₹900) and SGST at 9% (₹900), for a total of ₹11,800. If your client is in Karnataka instead, you charge IGST at 18% (₹1,800). The total is the same. What changes is which government gets the tax, and that's why it matters for your client's input tax credit.
Which GST rate should I use?
Since the rate changes of September 2025, most goods and services are taxed at 5% or 18%, with 40% for a short list of luxury and sin goods, and special low rates for items like gold. Check the rate for your exact HSN or SAC code in CBIC's GST rate finder before you invoice. Each line can have its own rate.
Just need the numbers?
The GST calculator adds GST to a price or takes it out of a GST-inclusive amount, and shows the CGST, SGST and IGST split.
Not charging GST?
If you're not GST-registered, or you're billing a client outside India, use the regular invoice generator. It supports 14 currencies and a simple tax line.
Questions
- Is this GST invoice generator free?
- Yes. Every feature is free, including your logo, GST calculation and PDF download. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many invoices you make.
- When do I charge CGST and SGST, and when IGST?
- If your state and the place of supply are the same, it's an intra-state sale: charge CGST and SGST (or UTGST in union territories without a legislature), each at half the GST rate. If they're different, it's an inter-state sale: charge IGST at the full rate. The generator picks the right one from the states you choose.
- Do I need my client's GSTIN?
- Add it when your client is GST-registered, because they need it on the invoice to claim input tax credit. For unregistered clients, leave it blank. If an unregistered client's invoice is ₹50,000 or more, include their name, address and state.
- What's the difference between HSN and SAC codes?
- HSN codes classify goods and SAC codes classify services. Services codes are six digits starting with 99, for example 998314 for IT design and development services. How many HSN digits you must show depends on your annual turnover.
- Does this create e-invoices with an IRN?
- No. Businesses above the e-invoicing turnover threshold (currently ₹5 crore) must also report B2B invoices on the government's Invoice Registration Portal to get an IRN and QR code. Below that, a regular tax invoice like this one is enough.
- How should I number GST invoices?
- Each number must be unique within the financial year and at most 16 characters, using letters, numbers, hyphens or slashes. A pattern like INV/2026-27/001 works well. Next invoice moves to the next number for you.
- Is my invoice data uploaded anywhere?
- No. Everything runs in your browser and your draft is saved only on your device, so your GSTIN and client details never reach our servers.
